Regarding recent allegations stemming from a study that Zinc Nacional has not had access to, we would like to clarify the following:
Zinc Nacional has been part of Monterrey’s industrial scene for 72 years and is internationally recognized as a leader in zinc compound production.
The company is working in coordination with the Secretariat of Environment of Nuevo León, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare, the Secretariat of Health of Nuevo León, and the Municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza to review and provide information related to emissions criteria, responsible handling of industry inputs and residues, as well as health and safety conditions for employees and surrounding communities.
As a precautionary measure, temporary suspensions have been enacted on two of the plant’s furnaces, while various verification teams carry out their inspections.
Additionally, Zinc Nacional consistently reports information on emissions from its San Nicolás plant, health controls for its employees, and soil, water, and air parameters as requested by the corresponding authorities.
Regarding SOx emissions, it is important to note that the data circulating in the media is 47 times higher than the actual figure reported by Zinc Nacional to the CAI (Clean Air Institute) Emissions Inventory. Efforts with the Environment Secretary to correct this inaccuracy have been underway since August 2023.
The oversight by local and federal authorities, as well as various audits conducted independently by clients, suppliers, and international certification bodies, attest to Zinc Nacional’s compliance with applicable regulations and the implementation of international standards in our operations.
Zinc Nacional remains committed to transparency and accountability to the communities near our operations. With this commitment, we reaffirm that we will continue to provide all necessary information requested by the authorities to address their observations. Should areas for improvement in our operations be identified, we will make the necessary adjustments to enhance the safety of working conditions for employees and neighboring communities.
The company supports the request from the Nuevo León’s Environment Secretary to access the full study mentioned in publications, which has generated concerns despite the unknown methodology and technical validity.
Finally, it is important to reiterate that, adhering to the highest standards of the industry at the national and international levels, Zinc Nacional holds certifications such as Clean Industry Certification since 1998, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, among others.
Zinc Nacional is proud to be part of the municipality of San Nicolás in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey and actively participates as part of its community to achieve a better environment together.
